VIGILINT warns travelers of Health risks

VIGILINT physicians and risk mitigation experts are tracking the Zika virus outbreak and its implications for global business and leisure travelers.  As the Zika virus continues to spread across the Americas, VIGILINT medical experts caution travelers of potential health risks including birth defects.

The Zika virus is a viral illness transmitted through the bite of an infected Aedes-species mosquito that has previously fed on a person infected with the Zika virus.  Found in 21 countries in South and North America and the Caribbean, Zika is linked to the fetal deformity called microcephaly, a condition wherein skull and brain development is stunted in utero.  There is also a risk of Guillain Barre syndrome, a rare autoimmune disorder that can lead to life-threatening paralysis.  In most cases, the virus causes a mild flu-like illness; 80% of the infected are asymptomatic.  No vaccine, treatment or cure is available.

“There’s a great deal of uncertainty about Zika and its relationship with birth abnormalities.  Until we know more about this health threat, we recommend travelers consult with their healthcare providers prior to travel and consider postponing travel to Zika infected areas,” stated Jay Humphlett, VIGILINT CEO.
